Its been 2 years since I have commented on the TNL site. I click on it once a month or so to make sure it is still here..what a comfort to think about the Vanderbecks and TLN. My life is different somehow because of this book. Mostly as I get older I am sad because of how wonderous all life discoveries were when I was 12. I had the rare childhood of living on a farm in Wisconsin and having a real trap line and my old buddy Todd traped beaver with his dad on the Black River Bottoms and swamps. We would start out at 6 am and make camp at 3pm before it got dark and head back the next morning at 6am full with experiences of life at its best. Then off to my farm to do the same thing, except no camping overnight without an adult. We all miss our youth, but I miss the realness of it all. No cell phones, nothing digital, no electric lines just life and death, good and bad. Quiet, Perfect, and clean. Those days are fading now. Chef Bob Vaningan Birmingham Al chefbob.com
